Welcome to this Sanda seminar, where we focus on the practical application of martial arts for real-world situations. Lyman: Shaolin Duan Pin Grading System - Level 1: 13 Fist (十三拳)

The Shaolin Duan Pin System is an official, standardized ranking system used by the Shaolin Temple to assess the skill level of Shaolin Kung Fu practitioners. Beginners can begin their journey with the first three levels, which emphasize foundational skills and basic hand forms. These levels are designed to be accessible, offering a manageable starting point for new students. In this seminar, you will learn the first-level form—Shi San Quan (13 Fist Form - 十三拳) — a key building block in mastering the art of Shaolin Kung Fu.

Lyman Chen

Shaolin Kung Fu

Kung Fu and Martial Arts Background:
Lyman Chen's martial arts journey began at the age of 9 when he earned his black belt in TaeKwonDo, laying a strong foundation for his lifelong passion. At 12, he traveled to China to study Kung Fu at the world's largest martial arts school, Tagou Martial Arts School, sparking an enduring commitment to the martial arts. By age 14, Lyman claimed first place in TaeKwonDo sparring at Tagou, and the following year, he earned second place at the International Traditional Kung Fu Competition in China. By 16, he triumphed with first place in the international Wushu elementary long fist competition. During his time at Tagou, Lyman also trained in kickboxing and Sanda under a four-time national Sanda champion. His competitive success continued across Georgia, Florida, and Alabama, where he earned numerous first-place titles in Sports Jiu-Jitsu, forms, and sparring.

Professional Coaching and Leadership:
Lyman's passion for martial arts seamlessly transitioned into a successful coaching career. In 2014, he earned Shodan certification in Okinawan Karate (Shito-Ryu style), further honing his teaching abilities. By age 12, he was already a certified Junior Instructor and Junior Shodan. His skills expanded as he trained in kickboxing, Sanda, and Junior MMA. As an instructor at the Shaolin Institute, Lyman led summer camps, advanced classes for both adults and children, and coached a performance team. His coaching experience also includes working with prestigious international groups, such as the Harvard Beijing Academy and various tour groups, while leading international classes at Tagou in 2015 and 2019. In 2024, Lyman became an official coach at Tagou, and later that year, he founded Phoenix Wellness Arts (PWA), where he serves as head coach.

Achievements and Recognition:
Lyman has earned numerous accolades throughout his martial arts career. He graduated with a diploma in traditional Kung Fu studies in 2015, achieving Golden Black Sash Level 2 in just three years at the Shaolin Institute. Among his many accomplishments, he placed third in advanced WuShu long fist and nunchuck form at the 2023 ICMAC, and in 2019, he secured first place in traditional, open, and weapon forms at KSF. Lyman's impact on the martial arts community is also reflected in his contributions to Tagou, where he led international classes in both 2015 and 2019. His expertise spans various styles, including animal forms, weaponry, drunken fist, TaeKwonDo, and Jiu-Jitsu. Lyman's relentless pursuit of excellence in martial arts continues to inspire students and peers alike.
In addition to his remarkable accomplishments, Coach Lyman recently excelled at the U.S. Shaolin Open Competition in Houston, TX. He brought home an impressive haul of medals, including 1 Golds, 1 Silver, and 1 Grand Champion Trophy. He also achieved a significant milestone by passing 3 levels of the Shaolin Duan Pin Grading System, which is officially certified by the Shaolin Temple. Furthermore, in 2024, Lyman was selected to become a member of the USA Team, chosen by the United States of America Wushu Kung Fu Federation (USAWKF).

Sebastian Thao

Sanda/Self Defense

Kung Fu and Martial Arts Background:
Sebastian Thao has 10 years of experience in Shaolin Kung Fu and is dedicated to sharing the knowledge and wisdom of Shaolin Chan (Zen) and Kung Fu within the martial arts community. He began his martial arts journey at age 15 under the guidance of Shifu Shi Deru (Shawn Liu), a 31st Generation Shaolin Grandmaster and a disciple of the late Venerable Abbot Shi Suxi. Shifu Deru is also known as the "Godfather of American Sanda" and is a Shaolin brother to Shi Deyang. Under Shifu Deru's mentorship, Thao excelled in Shaolin Kung Fu and quickly became one of Deru's top students and instructors.

Professional Coaching and Leadership:
Sebastian has contributed significantly to the martial arts community as an instructor, teaching both beginner and advanced classes for children and adults. In 2017, he took on the role of lead choreographer for Shifu Deru's Demo Team, further enhancing his leadership and teaching skills. In 2020, Thao joined the United States Army to further develop his leadership abilities. While serving, he introduced Shaolin Kung Fu to his platoon and trained two teammates in Chinese Sanda Kickboxing. Additionally, Thao continued his martial arts training by studying Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Achievements and Recognition:
Sebastian's dedication to martial arts has led him to receive further training from influential figures in the martial arts world. He trained under Coach Yang Tengzhu, a disciple of Coach Wu Bin, the former Wushu Coach for the Beijing Wushu Team. Thao also gained knowledge from Grandmaster Xay Long Yang and Sifu Lee Pao Xiong of the Hmong United Martial Arts Federation. Through these accomplishments and recognition, Sebastian has established himself as a skilled martial artist and respected instructor.

Steven Li

Modern Wushu

Modern Wushu Background:
Coach Steven Li is an accomplished Shaolin Kung Fu Practitioner and Wushu Athlete. He has trained with several renowned teachers throughout his martial arts career spanning over two decades, including Shi Xing Ying, 32nd Generation Shaolin Monk, Luo Minghan, Former Coach of the Hubei Wushu Team, and Zhao Qingjian, 2008 Olympic Wushu Champion. Coach Li has represented the United States on two occasions as a USA Wushu Team Member. After retiring from martial arts competitions, he applied his experience to train athletes in both forms and fighting competitions.

Professional Coaching and Leadership:
Coach Li brings the concepts of traditional Chinese Martial Arts and applies them with his real-world military experience. He has trained Wushu athletes to victories at various competitions, while also mentoring US Soldiers and NATO allies to fight, uphold democracy, and defend the ideals of a free world. His coaching philosophy is rooted in discipline and excellence, shaping athletes and soldiers to overcome challenges and achieve success.

Achievements and Recognition:
Throughout his professional competition career, Coach Li has won numerous titles and championships. He served in the United States Army as an Airborne Infantryman with the 82nd Airborne Division, including a combat tour to Afghanistan. Afterward, he joined the United States Army's Special Operations Command (USASOC), deploying worldwide to support operations in the defense of the nation. Coach Li's motto is "Sine Pari," meaning "Without Fear, Without Fail, Without Equal."

Crystal Yau

Tai Chi

Tai Chi and Martial Arts Background:
Crystal Yau, originally from Hong Kong, grew up under the guidance of her father, a Tai Chi Master specializing in Yang and Sun styles. Her early exposure to martial arts sparked a lifelong passion for Tai Chi and Kung Fu. Throughout her journey, Crystal expanded her practice to include Taekwondo, Karate, Jujitsu, Yoga, and aerial dance. Ultimately, she found her true calling in Shaolin Kung Fu, joining the Shaolin Institute in 2016 to study under Shifu Shi Deru (Shawn Liu), a 31st Generation Shaolin Grandmaster. At the Shaolin Institute, Crystal has immersed herself in Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Sanda, self-defense, and Zen, dedicating herself to both the Kung Fu and Tai Chi programs.

Professional Coaching and Leadership:
Crystal transitioned into coaching at the Shaolin Institute in 2017 while continuing her own studies. She became an important part of the leadership team as a teaching assistant and a key performer in the performance team, sharing her knowledge with fellow Shaolin practitioners. Crystal has taught Tai Chi classes, led kids' summer camps, and taught online during the pandemic. She and her team have performed at prestigious locations around metro Atlanta, including Atlantic Station, Stone Mountain, the Georgia Aquarium, Macy's, and Georgia Power. In 2024, Crystal, in collaboration with Lyman Chen, co-founded Phoenix Wellness Arts (PWA) in Duluth, GA, with the goal of promoting Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and Sanda to the local community.

Achievements and Recognition:
Throughout her time at the Shaolin Institute, Crystal has consistently excelled in competition, earning numerous medals and trophies at the KSF U.S. Open in both Kung Fu and Tai Chi. She achieved the prestigious Golden Black Sash Level 2 at the Shaolin Institute. In 2023, at the ICMAC in Orlando, FL, she earned an impressive 2 Golds and 2 Silvers in Kung Fu and Tai Chi open hand forms and weapons. At the U.S. Shaolin Open Competition in Houston, TX, Crystal took home 1 Gold and 1 Grand Champion Trophy. Additionally, she successfully passed 3 levels of the Shaolin Duan Pin Grading System, which is officially certified by the Shaolin Temple.
